Craft

The history of Telia Rumal, a double ikat weave, dates back to the 19th century in Chirala, Andhra Pradesh, India. "Telia" means oil, and "Rumal" means handkerchief. Originally used for turbans and keffiyehs, it was exported to Africa and Arabia. Gajam Govardhana revived the craft in Puttapaka in 1975. Puttapaka Telia Rumal received a Geographical Indication Tag in May 2020. Using the double-ikat technique, both warp and weft are resist-dyed before weaving on a traditional fly shuttle pit loom.
